What are S1P safety shoes?
Requirements for S1P safety footwear
"S1P" is a normative marking of the European standard EN ISO 20345 related to safety footwear. An S1P safety shoe meets the basic requirements (SB) and satisfies additional requirements, including protection against perforation (P).
S1 PL and S1 PS, the new markings of the EN 20345:2022 standard
In 2022, a new version of the EN 20345 standard was published, including an evolution of the marking related to puncture resistance. The "P" requirement necessary for the S1P normative marking is retained, but only for metallic inserts. For non-metallic inserts, two new tests have been defined:
- Test performed with a wide tip, resulting in the additional PL requirement and the S1 PL marking.
- Test performed with a fine tip, resulting in the additional PS requirement and the S1 PS marking.
Among the safety shoes certified according to the new EN 20345:2022 standard, you will still find S1P safety shoes for those with metallic puncture-resistant inserts. Additionally, for those with non-metallic puncture-resistant inserts, there will be S1 PL and S1 PS safety shoes depending on the test performed.
S1P safety shoes for dry environments
Unlike S2 or S3 shoes, S1P safety shoes are not designed to resist water penetration. Therefore, they are preferred by workers in dry environments without humidity and with minimal risk of liquid splashes.
S1P safety shoes are suitable for many professions, especially in:
- Industry and maintenance
- Secondary trades, particularly artisans working on "clean" sites such as electricians, plumbers, and heating engineers
- Logistics and handling
- Transportation
A comfortable and ergonomic pair of shoes
Besides essential safety features, S1P standard safety shoes also offer a high level of comfort for prolonged use.
S1P safety shoes are designed to dissipate heat from the feet while limiting sweating and the risk of overheating. The materials used for the upper are often extremely breathable, such as mesh, microfibre, or perforated textiles. They are also often equipped with a breathable lining and an insole that regulates temperature and wicks away moisture.
In the S1P safety shoe category, there are many trainers with a sporty look that workers particularly appreciate.
